Crossing Beacon on Howell Mill Rd at Channing Dr

How it’s shaping the Upper Westside

Residents and businesses along Howell Mill Road are all too familiar with playing a frightening game of human frogger trying to cross the street, especially where it curves at Channing Drive, just south of Collier Road. But this intersection now boasts a 17-foot-tall mast-arm with multiple flashing yellow lights that are instantly activated at the touch of a push-button located at street level. This Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacon (RRFB) makes the intersection safer for pedestrians and drivers alike.

This project required the collaboration of neighboring property owners, the Upper Westside Improvement District, and the City of Atlanta. The Channing Valley Neighborhood Association, Willy’s Mexicana Grill, and Chick-fil-A contributed funding.
