History was made last month with the completion of the Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design. Located at the intersection of Ferst Drive and State Street on Georgia Tech’s campus, this building was designed to harmonize design with nature and its environment.

Through cutting edge design and thoughtful construction practices the Kendeda building will over time actually reverse the environmental impact of its development by producing more energy than it consumes, making it a net-positive energy facility. Early estimates show that the building is 66 percent more efficient than other buildings of the same size and occupancy.

The development will soon feature a greenspace to provide a much needed respite from the hustle and bustle of the area. Now dubbed as the “Eco-Commons” this little oasis will allow the public to interact with the landscape in a unique way. Current plans include sections of foraging plants as well as restored woodlands.

We hope this development will prompt others to seek more sustainable construction methods, building materials, and ultimately buildings. The Kendeda building was once a parking lot but is now a modern marvel and a shining example of what the future of construction within our city could be.
