Chattahoochee Avenue is about to get a major upgrade that will make it safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists, and even one-wheelers traveling between The Works and Howell Mill Road!
In partnership with the City of Atlanta, our CID is working to design a multiuse path that will run parallel to Chattahoochee Avenue, stretching from Southland Circle to Howell Mill Road. Construction is expected to start this time next year.
This improvement is a direct result of the Upper Westside Master Plan, a comprehensive vision for our district that was finalized in 2021. We’re thrilled to be transforming the community’s ideas into tangible improvements that will enhance the way we move, live, and connect in the Upper Westside!
What’s a Multiuse Path, Exactly?
You may be wondering: What exactly is a multiuse path? Think of it as a BeltLine-style, 10-foot-wide concrete path designed for non-motorized transportation. This dedicated space will be built on the south side of Chattahoochee Avenue, creating a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and other alternative transportation users.
But that’s not all! Our plans include several additional improvements that will make Chattahoocheee Avenue more efficient and pedestrian-friendly:
- New Traffic Signal & Crosswalks at Taylor Street to improve safety for all users.
- Street Trees planted along the path to create a more pleasant, shaded environment.
- Repurposing One Westbound Traffic Lane at the Howell Mill & Chattahoochee intersection, transforming it into a left-turn lane to reduce congestion and wait times.
- Pedestrian-Scale Lighting added to complement existing roadway lighting, ensuring the path is well-lit and safe, especially at night.
What’s Happening Right Now?
You might have noticed a survey crew out on Chattahoochee Avenue recently. That’s our team gathering important data on existing conditions—things like the topography, trees, property lines, and utilities (such as light poles and gas lines). This survey information is crucial for our engineering team, as it helps us understand what’s feasible and where we can safely build the new path.
Once the survey data is compiled, our engineers will finalize the construction plans, and we’ll begin the permitting process. We anticipate we’ll begin permitting in Spring of 2025 and hope to have a contractor selected to begin construction before the end of next year.
Funding the Future of Chattahoochee Avenue
This transformative project is made possible in part by the Moving Atlanta Forward program, funded by Atlantans in 2022, and by the Upper Westside CID, thanks to the support of forward-thinking commercial and industrial property owners in the district.
We’re excited to bring this vision to life, and we can’t wait to see how these changes will improve mobility and safety for everyone in our community. Stay tuned for more updates as we move forward!
